STUART FARM: Affordable apartments centered around a restored 1828 farmhouse.
Since 2010 Kent Affordable Housing has developed 13 modern, attractive, and efficient apartments on Maple Street Extension in Kent. Phase I opened in December 2012, Phase II in June 2018, and Phase III in July 2020. Smaller than most affordable housing complexes, Stuart Farm is more like a family compound. The two-acre site is close to the center of Kent, is graced by stone walls and mature trees, and adjoins a land preserve. Phases II and III have photovoltaic solar panels that reduce electricity bills for the tenants.
Apartments in this development have one, two, or three bedrooms, seven are one level, five are townhouses and three are fully handicap-accessible. Three of the townhouses have garages. Rents range from approximately $400 to $1250 for families with 25%-80% of the local median income. Click here to see current income limits. All applicants must show stable modest incomes, satisfactory credit and criminal reports, and personal and professional references. Family size must be appropriate to the unit.
These apartments won an Award of Merit in 2015 from the Connecticut Historic Preservation Trust for their adaptation of an 1828 farmhouse. The handsome design combines visual elements of the old farm house with modern energy efficiency. Stuart Farm was designed by Stephen Lasar Architects of New Milford, CT. Construction was completed by Haynes Construction of Seymour, CT and Montagno Construction of Waterbury, CT.
Kent Affordable Housing's construction funding for Stuart Farm Apartments came from the CT Department of Housing, Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, Union Savings Bank, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, private gifts and support from the people of Kent and the surrounding area. Operating expenses of the apartments are covered by the tenants' rent and occasional grants.
